European Industry: Challenges & Opportunities of Cognitive Production

The Artificial Intelligence (AI) / Machine Learning (ML) tools within the context of Cyber-Physical embedded Systems (CPES) foster their position in the European industry since these tools can provide excellent services, enrich customer knowledge, and also exploit new business opportunities. Obviously, process monitoring together with the decision-making is important for the overall reliability of production quality. COGNINTEL Application Experiment develops and deploys an AI/ML-based decision-making platform to optimise machine tools operations by enabling an intelligent QEM management approach.

The ERREDUE company provides its own SW for DAQ and subsequent signal processing, including decision analysis with AI support. The solution will be tested at two use cases: laboratory in CIIRC CTU – multisensor monitoring of stainless steel drilling process, and operational by the SCORTA company – monitoring of tap grinding process.

The preliminary drilling test was run in the CIIRC CTU Testbed for Industry 4.0 in the past months before summer. The sensory equipment and data acquisition (DAQ) has been successfully tested in the laboratory of Robotics and Production technologies. In August 2021, the manufacturing experiment within the Use Case Scenario of CIIRC CTU/ DIH (Pilot 2) will be performed.

After the re-opening of factories due the COVID-19 lockdown in Italy, the ERREDUE company together with Scorta have installed sensors, DAQ, IoT Gateways (and Cloud DB) on the machines at Scorta premises. The complete machine installation will be ready by the end of September 2021. Meanwhile, the ERREDUE team is developing AI/ML algorithms.
