Introduction

COGNINTEL application experiment aims to deploy an AI-based decision making and control platform tailored to the machine tools industry. This can help optimize their operations by enabling a holistic and intelligent Quality, Energy and Maintenance (QEM) management approach.

COGNINTEL is one of 12 new application experiments that have been supported through the Open Call 1 of the DIH4CPS ecosystem involving DIHs and SMEs. All application experiments had an official starting date of March 1st 2021, with a complete duration of 18 months.

The initiative for Fostering DIHs for Embedding Interoperability in Cyber-Physical Systems of European SMEsDIH4CPS – will help European enterprises overcome innovation hurdles and establish Europe as a world-leading innovator of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. DIH4CPS will create an embracing, interdisciplinary network of DIHs and solution providers. It will focus on cyber-physical and embedded systems (CPES), interweaving knowledge and technologies from different domains. The initiative aims to connect regional clusters with the pan-European expert pool of DIHs.

COGNINTEL is an essential part of fostering rapid change and building resilience in manufacturing. Manufacturers with these digital platforms and advanced analytical capabilities will be able to react more quickly, effectively and successfully to Covid-19 disruptions.

Thanks to the DIH4CPS consortium, the COGNINTEL experiment will bring R&D results and new services in a higher-level network. This will enable the quick transfer of generated skills in different sectors. For example by embedding in other industrial contexts that have developed intelligent and holistic QEM management concepts. It will also bring a rapid response of the overall EU economy.

Business Case Description

The manufacturing industry uses IT, distributed sensors, embedded controls and big data analytics to manage and optimise KPIs such as quality, energy efficiency,  system availability and cost-effectiveness. Each stage is an “island of efficiency”. Cognitive production integrates these islands and enables effective performance management throughout the plant. Cognitive production is enabled by AI techniques that extract value from information related to the online status of assets and deploy a decision-based self-learning platform able to react dynamically.

Concept

The COGNINTEL project aims to provide users and plant managers with the tools to implement cognitive production. This is done by ensuring high production efficiency, high quality, minimising the use of resources while optimising maintenance strategies (avoiding safety-related failures and minimizing process downtime). Data collection, data fusion, and data communication and/or connection implemented in demo facilities.
